Does Ryzen Have Integrated Graphics?

Integrated graphics cards are integral to most budget and mainstream PCs as they enable essential video output capability.

While most Intel CPUs have integrated graphics, for those interested in AMD systems, the question remains, “does Ryzen have integrated graphics?”

The answer to that question is Yes AND No because whether your Ryzen CPU would have an integrated graphics card depends on its model. Not all AMD Ryzen CPUs feature integrated graphics.

Not having integrated graphics can significantly impact how you build your PC.

Without an integrated graphics card, the video output ports on your motherboard will not work, which will compel you to invest in a dedicated graphics card.

In the text below, we will talk in detail about which AMD Ryzen processors have integrated graphics cards, how some iGPUs are more potent than others, and the impact of not having an iGPU on your PC.

What is an Integrated Graphics Card?

An integrated graphics card is a graphics card found within a CPU. Unlike the dedicated graphics card, the integrated graphics card (iGPU) is NOT a separate standalone component.

iGPUs are often intended for budget and mainstream PCs that do not need robust graphics processing capability.

As such, they are not nearly as capable as dedicated graphics cards and cannot be used for gaming or professional editing/designing workstations.

Why Should You Care About an Integrated Graphics Card?

If your system lacks integrated graphics and a standalone dedicated graphics card, your PC will not have video output capability whatsoever!

Since motherboards DO NOT have onboard graphics processing chips, the video output ports you find on the back I/O panel of your motherboard are powered by the CPU’s iGPU.

In other words, the DVI, VGA, HDMI, or any other ports on your motherboard WILL NOT work if your CPU lacks an iGPU.

If your CPU lacks an iGPU, you must invest in a dedicated graphics card to add essential video output capability to your PC. Thus adding further to the cost of your PC build.

Therefore, you need an iGPU as the minimum to display stuff on your monitor.

Does Ryzen Have Integrated Graphics?

This brings us to the question, “does Ryzen have integrated graphics?”

As answered earlier, NOT ALL AMD Ryzen CPUs have integrated graphics.

AMD Ryzen has separate series for CPUs that do feature an iGPU and those that do not feature an iGPU.

We discuss this below:

What Ryzen CPUs Have Integrated Graphics?

AMD Ryzen CPUs with the ‘G’ Suffix feature an integrated graphics card from the RX Vega Series.

AMD calls their CPUs with iGPUs APUs or accelerated processing units.

Ryzen CPUs with no suffix or ‘X’ or ‘XT’ suffix in their names DO NOT feature integrated graphics. Examples of Ryzen CPUs that do not feature an iGPU include AMD Ryzen 5 3500, AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, AMD Ryzen 7 3600XT, etc.

The following is a list of AMD CPUs that DO feature an iGPU.

Note that despite the integrated graphics card sharing the same name across series, they are not the same in performance. An RX Vega 8 found in 5000 series Ryzen CPUs is far more potent than that found in 2000 series Ryzen CPUs.

How Do the Ryzen iGPUs Compare In Graphics Performance?

Not all iGPUs are equal in terms of performance.

Depending upon what Ryzen CPU you have, the performance of the iGPU can differ.

The following chart shows the performance rating as conducted by notebookcheck.com for different integrated graphics cards.

While AMD Ryzen CPUs may share the name of the iGPU across generations, their performance can be drastically different. In other words, do not judge the iGPU in the Ryzen CPUs by its name.

For instance, you can see that the RX Vega 8 Graphics, as found in 5000 series APU (i.e., AMD Ryzen 7 5700G), are far more capable than Vega 8 found on Ryzen 2000 or 3000 series APUs despite them sharing the same name.

GPU Performance Rating*
Vega 3 (R2000/3000) 6.7
Intel UHD 630 6.7
Vega 6 (R2000/3000) 9.4
Vega 8 (R2000/3000) 10.8
Vega 11 (R2000/3000) 13.1
Vega 6 (R4000/5000) 13.6
Vega 7 (R4000) 14.2
Vega 8 (R4000) 15.2
Vega 8 (R5000) 21.6

Can AMD Graphics Card Replace Dedicated Graphics Card?

iGPUs are not intended for gaming or professional editing works. However, iGPUs have come a long way in their graphical performance – mainly the AMD RX Vega series graphics.

As found in the ‘G’ series counterparts, the Vega series graphics are more capable than their Intel counterparts and can even be used as a substitute for entry-level dedicated graphics cards.

The following chart shows the G3DMark scores of the different graphics cards, including iGPUs and some entry-level dedicated graphics cards.

G3D Mark Scores

GPU G3D Mark Notes
Intel UHD 630 1395 As found on the 8-10th Gen Intel CPUs
Nvidia GeForce GT 740 (MSRP $79) 1543 Dedicated GPU Basic
Intel UHD 750 1684 As found on 11th Gen+ Intel CPUs
AMD Radeon Vega 3 (2018 Version) 1071 AMD 2000 Series APU
AMD Radeon Vega 6 (2018 Version) 1274 AMD 2000 Series APU
AMD Radeon Vega 8 (2018 Version) 1704 AMD 2000 Series APU
Intel Iris Pro 580 2044 Found on premium laptops.
AMD Radeon Vega 11 (2018 Version) 2139 AMD 2000 Series APU

Performance of Ryzen CPUs with iGPU vs. Ryzen CPUs WITHOUT iGPUs

Regarding sheer single and multicore CPU performance, the non-GPU variants have the upper hand.

The following charts show how the performance of non-‘G’ series Ryzen CPUs compares with ‘G’ series Ryzen CPUs.

Does Ryzen Have Integrated Graphics
CPU Passmark

Here you can see that AMD Ryzen CPUs WITHOUT iGPUs are much more potent than ‘G’ series CPUs with iGPUs regarding sheer processor performance.

Even the weaker AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (MSRP $100) is much more powerful than the AMD Ryzen 3 3400G (MSRP $150).

The only two exceptional ‘G’ series processors worth mentioning regarding CPU performance and overall value are the AMD Ryzen 5 5600G and the AMD Ryzen 7 5700G. They did not just offer a great graphics card but also an excellent CPU performance.

Again, if you choose to go for AMD Ryzen non-G series CPUs, you must invest in a dedicated graphics card, as the video output ports on the motherboard’s back I/O panel will not work.
